Our Outreach

HIGHER GROUND OUTREACH

The Higher Ground Outreach Ministries was started in January 1999.under the leadership and direction of Elder Cordell Carter.  He along with his wife and daughter began the ministry with this vision in mind, “to disciple men and women through outreach, ministering to the total man, spirit, soul and body by proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ in our locality, the nation, and ultimately to the world.”  This we have endeavored to do, with the help of some very committed volunteers and member support that God placed us in their hearts.  We as an outreach church, are determined to reach out to our community in various ways during the year with programs and events that are geared to show the love of God toward our fellow man.  We have maintained a constant monthly feeding program since our inception and is active in supporting parents and students with back to school supplies and accessories each year.  Our special programs include Thanksgiving Basket giveaways and Christmas Angel Tree toys and clothes giveaways for the community children.

We conduct weekly worship and training services (Sunday’s and Tuesday’s) for Bible teaching and instructions for our congregation.  We have special focus for our youth with programs that assist with open forums, men mentoring men sessions, and young women of destiny.  We use practical biblical examples and instructions to assist them with decision making, goal setting, and career oriented directions.  Our team of volunteers also schedule outing such as (bowling, skating, basketball tournaments, movies, and picnics)

The Higher Ground Outreach Church is a member of the CAPS (Coalition Against Poverty) in Suffolk that assists disadvantaged residents with fuel and utility assistance, housing placement, and faith and finance programs.  Our future plans are to organize and establish a transitional housing program to assist ex-offenders, veterans, homeless and otherwise disadvantaged citizens find affordable housing and transitional support services.  We endeavor to assist these individuals transition back into mainstream society as seamless as possible as they attempt to regather their lives.  In addition to the transitional housing services, we also coordinate and link clients with existing federal, state, and local workforce development and reentry programs within our area.

The church also is involved and supports the City of Suffolk’s Continuum of Care Planning Group, (5th Judicial District Juvenile Conference Committee).  It also supports the Southeastern Virginia Job Training Administration and the Prison Reentry Council Program, in an effort to deter juveniles and high risk individuals who are and were involved in criminal behavior.  We provide support groups and mentoring programs designed to offer better alternatives to a life of crime and incarceration to those at risk.

Since 1999 until now, we hold fast to the charge to help people recover from the damage of sin, but we also understand that we should operate by Kingdom principles and standards.

Our prayer is that God will continue to use us in whatever way he sees fit, and that souls will be loosed, delivered, and set free, by the power of Jesus Christ.
